Migration

Whether you are migrating users to a new Windows operating system, or moving users from a physical PC to a virtual environment, RES Software products significantly accelerating the migration process and ensuring end-user productivity and satisfaction even through a major infrastructure change like a migration.

OS Migration

When it comes to operating system migrations, administrators know that this can be a very tedious and time-consuming task. Almost always, the end-users are affected in some way or another. It may be a simple setting within an application like the Microsoft Outlook signature or the layout and theme of the latest version of Microsoft Office. It could be more advanced user settings or files like desktop shortcuts, Microsoft Outlook nicknames file, or all the personal settings within the Microsoft Office suite of applications that are missing or no longer configured like they were before.

Organizations that leverage the use of a user workspace management platform gain the required automation for OS upgrades, including migration to Windows 7. A user workspace management product decouples the user’s customizations from the underlying operating system,  Individual customizations are stored on the network and transferred to the local device as the user begins work with it, so the process to reapply those settings to a new OS version becomes inconsequential. Personality information is automatically transferred down to the user’s refreshed computer, allowing the user to immediately return to work.

“We made the transition without any problems. On the Monday, everybody could simply log on and continue to work in the RES PowerFuse desktop.”

Physical to Virtual Desktop Migration

Many organizations want to reduce the costs associated with supporting desktop users, and one of the most promising ways to do that is with desktop virtualization. The cost savings of desktop virtualization are usually realized via lower management costs associated with managing a single “master” installation of Windows that all users share instead of managing a unique installation for each user. While this makes sense for IT, it poses unique challenges for users, especially when the freedom of their own PC is replaced with a standard, impersonal, corporate desktop.

Organizations that leverage the use of a user workspace management solution automatically gain the necessary automation for physical to virtual desktop migration.  User Workspace Management solutions decouple the user workspace, which broadly consists of application settings pertaining to a user, from the applications and the operating system in such a manner that those settings can be seamlessly layered on top of any generic corporate image.

The user can then be moved to a standardized virtual desktop. When the user accesses this standard image, the user data is dynamically applied by composing a personalized and secure workspace, recreating their PC environment. Any subsequent personalization settings are then persisted between virtual desktops sessions, ensuring the user always has a familiar, personal experience.
